Learn About Kimberly

Kimberly Kuhn, LCSW, LCSW-C, grew up in Rochester, NY and has recently relocated to Santa Cruz, California from Frederick, Maryland. Kimberly was the owner of Horizon Counseling Services, LLC and has had a successful private practice in Frederick, Maryland and in Virginia for over 11 years. Kimberly incorporates a holistic model of healing as well as a cognitive behavioral, solution oriented, and empowerment model into her approach as a therapist by incorporating a variety of techniques based on each persons needs. 

Kimberly received her BA in psychology from Nazareth College of Rochester in New York. She graduated cum laude and was inducted into Psi Chi, the psychology honors association. Kimberly then graduated from Syracuse University with her Master’s in Social Work, magna cum laude, and an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies. During her graduate work, Kimberly completed her first year internship at the Legal Aid Society in Rochester, NY conducting home visits, biopsychosocial assessments, providing recommendations to the guardian ad litems, and testifying in court. Her second internship was in an adult ambulatory unit and emergency room at Genesee Hospital in Rochester, NY. She completed assessments, provided counseling to individuals, couples, and families. She also conducted a group for PTSD Symptom Management.

Since her graduation, she was a Primary Counselor and Program Coordinator for the Maya Angelou House of So Others Might Eat, Inc. The Maya Angelou House, provided 90 days of inpatient drug and alcohol treatment for homeless women from Washington DC. She then opened her private practice in 2000 in the greater Washington DC area. She has had a thriving practice serving adolescents and adults conducting individual, family, and couples counseling.  

Kimberly has also done contracting work through her practice. She provided group and individual counseling and assessments at a state detention center, provided in-home services for Children Services of Virginia, and has conducted various trainings for local and state organizations. Kimberly also worked in an emergency department conducting crisis assessments and working as a part of a crisis management team.  In addition to the work she has done as a clinician, Kimberly is an Acu-detox Specialist and has used auricular acupuncture to assist people from detoxing from drugs and alcohol. 

Kimberly is also a Certified Behavioral Analyst using the DISC Assessments both in corporate environment as well as with families and couples. She can provide executive consultation and coaching services as well as lead workshops for team building and corporate development.

Throughout her career, Kimberly has also had a strong commitment to her professional organization, the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). She has served on the Board of Directors for NASW-Virginia Chapter from 2000-2010. She served as District Chair, Vice President, and President. She has also served three terms as a Delegate for the NASW Delegate Assembly.

In Kimberly’s free time, she has taught yoga, mountain bikes, kayaks, and spends as much time as she can outdoors.
